International conference of Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Mahasabha:Closer ties with Bangladesh mooted

SILCHAR, Dec 9 – The first two-day long international conference of Nikhil Bishnupriya Manipuri Mahasabha concluded at the Bhubaneswar Sadhu Thakur community hall in Silchar recently. The president of Mahasabha, Dr Debendra Kumar Sinha inaugurated the conference by hoisting the flag. The inaugural meeting held on the occasion was addressed among others by Padmasen Sinha of Bangladesh, Chandrakanta Sinha, Bidip Sinha of USA, internationally acclaimed dancer Tamanna Rahman, general secretary Uday Sinha, president of Sanskriti Parishad Jogendra Kumar Sinha, president of Sahitya Parishad BK Sinha, Shymasundar Sinha and Kartik Sinha.

All the speakers stressed the need of strengthening the economic, cultural and social relation with the neighbouring Bangladesh because, a great chunk of Bishnupriya Manipuris are living there. Padmasen Sinha in his address informed that a building is being constructed at Sylhet in Bangladesh for the preservation of language, culture and tradition of Bishnupriya Manipuris and the Bishnupriya Manipuri Academy has also been established.

More than three thousand Bishnupriya Manipuri people from United States of America, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and the various States of the country participated in the conference. A colourful cultural procession was taking out in the main streets of Silchar town in the morning of concluding day. The valedictory function was attended among others by Social Welfare Minister Gautam Roy, Public Health Engineering Minister Dinesh Prasad Goala, Minister of State for Cooperation Misbaul Islam Laskar, MP SM Dev, former Union Minister Kabindra Purkayastha, executive editor of Kolkata’s Ananda Bazar Patrika, Suman Chattapadhyay and Anil Kumar Bodo of Bodo Sahitya Sabha. Various resolutions were adopted in the concluding session.

The 10-day long national integration camp for tribal youths organised by the Nehru Yuva Kendra of Cachar concluded in Silchar recently. The valedictory function was presided over by Cachar Deputy Commissioner PK Das and was attended by Minister of State for Cooperation (Independent charge), Misbaul Islam Laskar, Public Health Engineering Minister Dinesh Prasad Goala, former Union Minister Kabindra Purkayastha, MLA Bimalangshu Roy, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Cachar Bahnisikha Dutta, the secretary of Silchar District Sports Association (DSA) Babul Hore among others.

All the speakers praised the NYK for organising such northeast level integration camp for tribal youths and hoped that the tribal youths of all the northeastern states including Sikkim have shared their rich cultural heritage among themselves and this will create a bond of amity, they underlined. Some of the participants also expressed their experiences in the function. Earlier, the purpose of organising such northeast level conference was briefly explained by the District Youth Coordinator of Cachar, Nehru Yuva Kendra, Sekhar Ranjan Deb.
